About Mikayla: I’ve always said I wanted to do yoga as I liked how it had some similarities to gymnastics which I did growing up. Once I got to college my mental health plummeted and I started taking courses in mediation to help myself. Eventually I found a yoga instructor in the area and started working for her studio in exchange for free classes and was hooked instantly. I fell in love with all things yoga and took it a step further by declaring a minor in “mindfulness and contemplative studies” (super cool that they even offered this as a minor). Fast forward a few years later I finally found the courage to sign up for a teacher training!
Why Mikayla started practicing and became an Instructor: I love yoga and know first hand how helpful it has been for my overall well being. Yoga both challenges me to try new asanas or meditations and helps me surrender. My mat has always been a safe place to return to. It helped me learn how to breathe. If I can offer even a little of what I’ve received from this practice then that’s a win. I’m lucky to say I have a few mentors. First off definitely has to go to Robin. This woman does so much for so many people and to learn from her was an honor I’ll always be thankful for. Second, my first teacher Helena up at Syracuse who introduced everything to me. Lastly my friends/teachers Jane and Coco who own the studio near me and were always so welcoming and knowledgeable and made everyone feel safe to come as they are. They’re a huge reason for my focus on mobility and functional movement in my yoga practice.
What inspires Mikayla off the mat: Art
A note from Mikayla: To me, yoga is self love!! Connecting to your inner child. Being silly and curious. Accepting the falls and wobbles and imperfections.
