About Connie: Though I’ve lived and traveled throughout the country, I grew up on Long Island, and am blessed to have an incredible homebase here! As is so commonly the case with yogis, my interest in yoga came from a place of real need. Physical illness and the stress of combating it brought me to deepen my practice, and my mat became my dear friend. I’ve realized that often our life’s purpose reveals itself through an initial experience of pain or deprivation, and struggling with my health and wellbeing harnessed an unwavering passion in me to prioritize the pursuit of wellness, and be a facilitator for others along their own path.
Why Connie started practicing and became an Instructor: On my first day at a summer job I took on Shelter Island, my boss suggested that my keen interest in yoga qualified me to teach a class in front of about 100 strangers. I had NEVER taught a class before in my life. She gave me roughly 45 minutes to prepare. It was sort of like one of those anxiety dreams where you didn’t study for an important test you didn’t even know you had. Amazingly, it was the big push over the cliff I needed to find my calling. I enjoyed it so much I started a sunrise yoga club, hassling my roommates to get up at the crack of dawn and begging friends and family to let me teach them, until I finally got nudged to commit to a 200 hr program. Teaching is so humbling and healing all at once, and knowing there’s always room to grow and deepen inspires me to constantly aspire for improvement.
What inspires Connie off the mat: The natural world is my biggest reset button.
A note from Connie: My yoga teaching and barre teaching styles are night and day! Yoga to me, even vinyasa forms, always has a yin-like spirit behind it, embracing flow and exploration while giving space to honor rest and support where needed. Barre for me is the time to PUSH, and dig deep and expand discipline in the body and mind, testing muscles you didn’t even know you had. I’ve found the two are incredibly complementary and the practice of both builds a deep confidence that comes from real balance.
